When the two leaders met for talks on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit, they shook hands and followed that up with a hug. Prime Minister Modi thanked Putin for his “strong friendship, ” lauded Russia’s growing cooperation, and noted the evolution of BRICS as a strong financial and political block.

Addressing the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Modi indicated to Putin that the matter should be resolved “peacefully and quickly.”

At the meeting, PM Modi said, “We have been in constant touch over the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.  We believe that problems should be resolved only through peaceful means. We fully support the early restoration of peace and stability. All our efforts give priority to humanity.  India is ready to provide all possible support in the times to come,” he said.

New Delhi has walked a diplomatic tightrope since the Ukraine conflict began, pledging humanitarian support for Kyiv while avoiding explicit condemnation of Russia’s offensive.

PM Modi previously visited Kyiv in August and Moscow in July to encourage talks. India is uniquely positioned to broker a resolution with friendly relations with both nations.Prime Minister Modi reiterated his commitment to peace and sustainable development during his meeting with President Zelenskyy. He emphasized that without peace, long-term progress is impossible.

India’s initiative to broker peace between Russia and Ukraine has been praised by US President Joe Biden and several European leaders.

The expectation is high that the conflict will also be discussed during the summit.
