A Hat-trick of Nominations for Alzarri Joseph as West Indies Cricket Celebrates 50th Anniversary of 1975 World Cup Victory

June 4, 2025 – Alzarri Joseph leads the pack with three nominations as Cricket West Indies (CWI) and the West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA) announce the nominees for the 8th CWI/WIPA Awards Gala.

Joseph was nominated for Test Player of the Year, Men’s One Day Player, and Men’s T20 Player of the Year.

The Awards Gala recognizes and celebrates the excellence of West Indies players in international formats and domestic tournaments for the previous year.

According the the joint press release issued by Cricket West Indies (CWI) and the West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA), ’This year’s Gala will also serve as a tribute to one of the most defining moments in West Indies cricket history—the 50th anniversary of the 1975 ICC Cricket World Cup victory, under the legendary leadership of Sir Clive Lloyd’.

In celebrating the nominees, Wavell Hinds, President and CEO of the West Indies Players’ Association, stated, ‘This occasion is one of deep respect—not only for the achievements of our players, but also for the path they walk, the values they uphold, and the legacy they are entrusted with. The CWI/WIPA Awards Gala is a celebration of talent, yes, but more importantly, it is a testament to the courage, character, and community behind the game. We are immensely proud of the nominees for this year’s awards. Their efforts remind us that excellence is not simply about performance—it is about perseverance, preparation, and purpose.’

In his remarks, Chris Dehring, Chief Executive Officer of Cricket West Indies, shared his thoughts on the inclusion of the 50th anniversary tribute to the 1975 ICC World Cup Champions, our West Indies, in this year’s award ceremony. ‘This year, as we shine a spotlight on our modern-day heroes, we are also deeply honoured to commemorate the legacy of the 1975 World Cup champions. That team, led by Sir Clive Lloyd, not only won the first ICC Men’s Championship trophy—they ignited a spirit of belief and regional pride that transcended the boundary ropes.’  That Champion team included Sir Anderson Roberts and Sir Vivian Richards from Antigua and Barbuda.

The twin-island nation also celebrates Rakheem Cornwall, who is among the nominees for the CG United Super50 Cup Player of the Year.

The 8th CWI/WIPA Awards Gala will be held on Sunday, June 22, 2025, at the Wyndham Grand Barbados Sam Lord’s Castle.
