The Spirit of Christmas -ABYSO & Inspire Youth Choir confirm a new Antiguan tradition

It was a packed house for what is now fast becoming one of Antigua and Barbuda’s most cherished annual Christmas traditions.  The third edition of The Spirit of Christmas, presented by the Inspire Youth Choir and the Antigua and Barbuda Youth Symphony Orchestra.

Caribbean Christmas Medley

From the first tug of a violin string shortly after the scheduled 7 pm start, the evening announced itself as more than a concert. It was a celebration of youth, discipline, artistry, and the living spirit of Christmas. The attentive audience was rewarded as the programme unfolded like a finely stitched quilt of sacred tradition, cinematic warmth, and Caribbean soul. From the opening prayer to the final communal sweep of We Wish You a Merry Christmas, the night never lost its sense of purpose. We were not merely entertained. We were immersed in December itself.

The programme’s theological framing gave the evening its spine. Joy to the World and Scripture readings from Matthew 1:18 -24 and Luke 2:1 – 14 anchored the concert in the story of Christ’s birth. Later, O Holy Night and the Hallelujah Chorus wrapped the program in spiritual grandeur, reminding the audience that Christmas is first and foremost a sacred season.

The Youth Symphony Orchestra rose beautifully to the occasion, particularly in the classical repertoire. Trepak (Russian Dance) from The Nutcracker and Carol of the Bells gave the ensemble room to showcase itself. Under the steady baton of Keith Slade, the orchestra played with discipline and clarity. The strings were crisp, the winds confident, and there was none of the hesitancy that so often marks youth ensembles.

The Swan from Carnival of the Animals. Cellists Alycia Alie and Sa’Kyah Leadette, accompanied by Sally Alexander on piano

One of the evening’s most exquisite moments came with The Swan from Carnival of the Animals. Cellists Alycia Alie and Sa’Kyah Leadette, accompanied by Sally Alexander on piano, delivered a performance of tender elegance that hushed the hall.

The Inspire Youth Choir continues to evolve into far more than a collection of fine voices. In pieces such as “When You Believe” and “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day,” the choir demonstrated thoughtful phrasing, controlled dynamics, and emotional depth. Their ability to move seamlessly between styles stood out. They were just as comfortable in the reverent hush of “O Holy Night” as in the rhythmic warmth of the Caribbean Christmas Medley, which felt like a true homecoming.

Perhaps the most powerful thing about The Spirit of Christmas is what it represents. The ABYSO and Inspire Youth Choir have become a beacon for the development of youth creative arts in Antigua and Barbuda.

In my mind’s eye, I see the return of the Youth Steel Orchestra and stronger support for the National Youth Theatre as part of this growing creative ecosystem.

These young musicians are not hobbies. They are a growing cultural workforce. The investment of parents, commercial partners, schools, and agencies who support their journey deserves genuine applause.

Merry Christmas, everyone, and see you all at the 2026 ABYSO performances.
