Since its inception, the National Secondary Schools’ Theatre Festival has positively impacted the growth of the creative industries in Antigua and Barbuda.
One important component has been the advancement of student and teacher participants over the years. In 2015, the government supported the festival by awarding scholarships to the best male and female actors to attain associate degrees in Barbados.
Junior Weathered, then of the Clare Hall Secondary School, captured this title, and upon completing his
studies returned to Antigua and Barbuda and joined the teaching fraternity to share his knowledge with theatre students.
Having been awarded “Best Director” and “Best Original Script” each time the Antigua Girls’ High School entered the drama category, teacher Zahra Airall was awarded a scholarship to pursue a master’s in theatre education.
And having won “Best Actress” twice, Shaveesa Gasper received a scholarship to pursue a bachelor’s in theatre education at the Edna Manley School of Visual and Performing Arts. She graduated valedictorian in 2024 and is currently employed as the Ministry of Creative Industries’ drama coordinator. Shaves shared, “It’s so different being on the other side of this festival … but I am excited to see the new generation of students taking part and I hope the public comes out to support them.”
The top performers continue to access scholarship opportunities annually as part of their winner’s circle rewards.
These are samples of how the government’s investment and support of the National Secondary Schools’ Theatre Arts Festival continues to positively impact human resources and national economic development through The Arts.
This year’s festival takes place from Tuesday, 22nd, to Friday 25th April 2025, at the Multipurpose Cultural and Exhibition Centre. Each night begins at 7 p.m. Admission is only XC$15 for students and XC$25 for adults. Go out and support the youth of Antigua and Barbuda.
