Shahoi Dorsett – 2025 Football National Sports Award Nominee

compiled by Spectator Sports Desk

At 21 years old, Shahoi Dorsett is on the rise as one of Antigua and Barbuda’s most promising football talents. A commanding and agile goalkeeper, he combines sharp reflexes, composure under pressure, and strong leadership qualities.

During his time with FCV Academy in England, Shahoi enjoyed a remarkable season. He was named Player of the Year and Golden Glove winner in the England National Youth Football League. His outstanding performance earned him a call-up to the club’s senior team, where he contributed to the league and cup double championships. He was recognized as Best Academy Player at the end of the season.

In June 2025, Dorsett’s form earned him a call-up to the Antigua and Barbuda national football team for the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers against the Honduras national football team in Honduras.

It was a defining moment. Facing relentless pressure, Dorsett produced a Man of the Match performance, making 12 saves, including a crucial penalty stop. The display was not just athletic. It was courageous. On foreign soil, under international scrutiny, he stood unshaken.

The performance sparked interest from several clubs and ultimately led to his signing with Lorca Deportiva in Spain, where he now continues his professional journey in European football.

The year was not without serious challenges that tested his resilience. Shahoi suffered a grade-one meniscus injury that kept him sidelined for a period. As captain of his club, being unable to compete was mentally and emotionally difficult. Accustomed to constant training, competition, and improvement, he instead found himself watching from the sidelines. He endured feeling isolated, mentally drained, and at times questioning his purpose.  Through determination and belief, he overcame those setbacks and returned stronger.

Shahoi reflects that winning this award would mean recognition for the unseen work behind the scenes. It represents the early mornings, the days he trained without confidence or motivation, and the sacrifices made in pursuit of his goals.

If he were to summarise the year in one word, it would be Resilience.

Through injury, pressure, and opportunity, Shahoi Dorsett proved that perseverance and faith in one’s ability can turnadversity into breakthrough moments.

The 2025 National Sports Award ceremony is scheduled for March 1, 2026. Last March, at the 32nd edition of the National Sports Award, Antigua and Barbuda Athletic Association’s Tyra Fenton captured the Junior Sportswoman of the Year title, while the Antigua and Barbuda Cricket Association’s Jewel Andrew captured the Junior Sportsman of the Year title.
