President Xi Jinping and President Donald J. Trump on Latest Call

September 20, 2025 – On the evening of September 19, 2025, President Xi Jinping spoke with U.S. President Donald J. Trump on the phone. The two presidents spoke for almost two hours on the current state of China-U.S. relations and other issues of mutual interest. They reviewed the steady development of China-U.S. relations going forward. The conversation was pragmatic, positive, and constructive.

President Xi highlighted that China and the United States are allies who stood shoulder to shoulder during World War II. Earlier in September, China commemorated the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, inviting the families of American Flying Tigers to watch the parade on the Tiananmen Rostrum. Xi further stressed that the Chinese people will never forget the vital support from the U.S. and other anti-fascist Allied Nations in China’s War of Resistance. Honoring fallen heroes and remembering history is essential to cherishing peace and building a better future. President Trump said that China’s recent parade was phenomenal and beautiful.

President Xi stressed the vital importance of China-U.S. relations. China and the United States are fully capable of working together for mutual success and global prosperity. He stated, “For that vision to materialize, both sides need to work hard and in the same direction, so as to realize mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation.”

President Trump agreed that the United States-China relationship is the most important bilateral relationship. He agreed that the two countries working together can get many great things done that are good for peace and world stability.

The recent consultation between Chinese and U.S. officials reflected the spirit of equality, respect, and mutual benefit. Both Presidents agreed that the negotiations can continue to adequately address the outstanding issues in bilateral relations and strive for mutually beneficial outcomes.

Chinse owned Tik-Tok is a core issue between the US and China

President Xi indicated that the U.S. side should refrain from imposing unilateral trade restrictions so as not to disrupt the outcomes of multiple rounds of consultation between the two sides. He reaffirmed China’s position on the TikTok issue: “The Chinese government respects the wishes of the company in question and would be happy to see productive commercial negotiations in keeping with market rules lead to a solution that complies with China’s laws and regulations and takes into account the interests of both sides. The U.S. side needs to provide an open, fair, and non-discriminatory environment for Chinese investors.”

President Trump affirmed that the U.S. would like to have a long-term, big and great relationship with China. He referred to the U.S.-China relationship as the most important bilateral relationship, and the two countries working together can get many great things done that are good for the peace and stability of the world.  He agreed that the U.S. and China teams will continue to work towards agreements on the economy and trade, and support reaching a proper deal on TikTok through consultation. The U.S. will also work with China for world peace.

Up to the time of this call, officials from both sides have held four rounds of talks. The US has already imposed 20% tariffs on some Chinese goods, and there are still challenges regarding the U.S. export of technology-related goods to China.

The call included plans for in-person meetings at the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, which starts on October 31 in Gyeongju, South Korea. President Trump also stated that he would visit China early next year, and President Xi would consider a visit to the U.S. later.
