17-year-old Philisha Burnette has emerged as one of the most outstanding young talents in volleyball. A dynamic and versatile Outside Hitter for Chargers Eagles Volleyball Club, she played a pivotal role in leading her team to an Antigua and Barbuda Division 2 championship, demonstrating skill, consistency, and leadership beyond her years.
In 2025, Philisha elevated her game to new heights. She earned selection to the National Senior Women’s Volleyball Team, competing alongside experienced athletes at the highest level in the region. She also captained her country at the NORCECA U18 Beach Volleyball Tournament in the Dominican Republic, showcasing her leadership, composure, and adaptability on the international stage.
Adding to her remarkable year, Philisha was among the first two individuals awarded a sports scholarship to The University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus (UWI-FIC) in Antigua, a historic achievement that reflects her excellence both academically and athletically.

Being named Junior Volleyballer of the Year means far more to Philisha than receiving a title. It represents every early morning practice, every demanding training session, every injury endured, and every moment of doubt overcome. Volleyball is not just a sport to her, it is a passion and a defining part of who she is. The award reflects her resilience, discipline, and unwavering commitment to growth. She summed it up by saying that winning Junior Sportswoman of the Year would be an absolute dream.
Volleyball is often seen as a height-dominated sport, and as a shorter athlete competing at a high level, she has had to work even harder to prove herself. This recognition sends a powerful message to other athletes who may feel underestimated because of their stature. It would show that limitations are not defined by height, but by mindset. With determination, confidence, and perseverance, any challenge can be overcome.
This recognition serves as motivation for Philisha to continue striving for excellence. She hopes her journey inspires other young athletes to dream boldly, remain consistent, and believe that greatness is achievable regardless of the expectations of others.
The 2025 National Sports Award ceremony is slated for March 1, 2026. Last March at the 32nd edition of the National Sports Award, Bikini Fitness Pro Ambassador Kimberly Percival captured her fifth Sportswoman of the Year title while West Indies cricketer Alzarri Joseph walked away with his third Sportsman of the Year title.
