Spectating in China – The Journey Begins

September 1, 2024 – With feelings of jetlag firmly behind me I have fully immersed myself in the media exchange program hosted by the China International Press Communication Center (CIPCC) based in Beijing China.
I walk in the steps of Antigua and Barbuda’s 1 st participant Terry Andrew who encouraged me before I departed from Antigua and Barbuda to embrace the experience fully, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

The program commenced Monday 19 th August, 2024 with remarks from CIPCC director, Lei Yu. During his remarks, he reiterated to the participants that the four-month program is primarily meant to foster close media cooperation between China and the participating countries. He said, “this is a very precious opportunity for all of us to be working together in China for the same objective, which is the promotion of mutual understanding between China and the outside world”. It is anticipated that the networking among the regions would result in better cooperation and stronger relationships, to the benefit of the participating countries. The four-month-long program has 94 media professionals from 84 countries and consists of media training, exposure to diverse

Chinese cultural traditions and practices, observation of the local government at work, immersion into social events and activities, and attending, as observers, International Summits hosted in China and meetings of the National Congress. The program has moved at a steady pace to include sessions in Mandarin, Seal Cutting, and an all-inclusive Tai Chi, from which I am still recovering. Social field trips included the Beer Festival with over 100 beer brands to sample and a river boat ride with the highlight of a night light show and a visit to The Great Wall. Information sessions included an overview of the Modern Chinese economy and the context within which it engages with the rest of the world; visits to social projects targeting youth enterprise and the national hotline service; and a media equipment trade fair.
Upcoming events include the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit. There has been so much to absorb during my stay to date: the various sessions have been very informative providing valuable perspective on the Chinse way of life and business. Despite the vast difference in size and available natural resources, there are many low-hanging options that I ponder the value of a better Wadadli. Yes, there is lots of room to improve on my paradise.

The journey continues, with more to explore and appreciate. Petra-The-Spectator, spectating in China!!!
