Benna Boys Advance to Concacaf Under-20 Championships

The young Benna Boys have written a new chapter in Antiguan football folklore. With one towering leap and a perfectly timed header in the 89th minute, Brandon Satchell sent Antigua and Barbuda into the Concacaf Under-20 Championships, sealing a dramatic 1–0 victory over the Dominican Republic in Group C of the Concacaf U20 Qualifiers in Costa Rica.

The breakthrough came from a moment of precision and belief. Captain Keyonte George delivered a teasing corner into the box, and Satchell rose above the defence to guide the ball into the far corner. The net rippled. The bench erupted. Coaches sprinted. History tilted in red and black at Costa Rica Federation Field #1.

It was more than just a goal. It was the exclamation mark on a flawless campaign.

Antigua and Barbuda finished the group stage with a perfect four wins from four, collecting 12 points and conceding zero goals. Only the group winner would advance. A draw would have sent the Dominican Republic through on goal difference. There was no margin for hesitation. The Benna Boys chose courage instead.

Earlier victories over St Lucia 1–0, the British Virgin Islands 2–0, and Dominica 1–0 laid the foundation. Against the Dominican Republic, the young Antiguans controlled much of the attack, generating chances but finding no breakthrough until the final heartbeat of the match.

Head Coach Schyan Jeffers had quietly signalled what was coming. After the Dominica victory, he pointed to his team’s defensive steel and tactical maturity while speaking with News Co Media. “We haven’t conceded any goals. We are playing compact; very good behind the ball in mid-block and low-block. I haven’t seen that in a long time with Antiguan teams,” Jeffers said, also highlighting the blistering pace of Greg Williams as a key weapon.

His assessment proved prophetic. The defence remained airtight. The discipline held. The patience paid off.

A System Years in the Making

Speaking to Spectator Sports, the Antigua and Barbuda Football Association’s (ABFA) Technical Director, Sowerby Gomes, says the triumph reflects years of deliberate development within the national programme.

Over the last five years, each of these players would have represented Antigua and Barbuda at the CFU U14, Concacaf U15 and U17 levels. We have been carefully mapping their development, tracking their growth and investing heavily in their progress,” Gomes explained.

He also emphasised that the programme’s success extends beyond the football field.

Academically, each of these boys is on sound academic pursuits. Around them we have some of the best football minds guiding their development: Head Coach Neil Schyan Jeffers, Assistant Coaches Janeil Simon and Rackley Thomas, team trainer and physio Evans Jawaki Jones, and Team Manager Roderick Williams. One hundred percent Antiguan, home-grown, with God at the helm.”

For Gomes, the team’s performance reflects not only the talent of the players but also the growing strength of Antigua and Barbuda’s coaching system.

I am extremely proud of the team and the way they executed their task, game by game and moment by moment. They have made us all proud. It is a true testament to the coach education pathway we have been developing. The coaches in the national setup have worked extremely hard at their craft, and it shows in the development of the players.”

He believes the qualification campaign was about more than a single tournament.

When I said this tournament was a battle of institutions, I was very deliberate with those words. It shows clearly what we are doing, where we are at, and it also reflects where we still need to be. We are not done yet. The journey continues.”

The 12-team Concacaf Championship, set for July 25 to August 9, 2026, will feature the region’s elite youth sides and will serve as qualification for both the 2027 FIFA Men’s U-20 World Cup and the 2028 Summer Olympics. Antigua and Barbuda now steps onto that stage unbeaten, unbowed, and unscored upon.

Four matches. Four wins. Zero conceded. One unforgettable header.

Spectator Sports extends congratulations to the U20 Benna Boys, the Technical and Management Team, the ABFA, and all Antiguans and Barbadians, at home and abroad.
