Asafa Donovan – 2025 Junior Volleyball National Sports Award Nominee

Compiled by Spectator Sports Desk

17-year-old Asafa Donovan has already established himself as one of the most promising young talents in volleyball. Competing as a powerful Opposite Hitter for Pytonz and Island Academy School, he combines athleticism, strength, and composure well beyond his years. His ability to perform under pressure has made him a key contributor at the school, club, and national levels.

In 2025, Asafa reached a significant milestone by making his senior team debut with the Antigua and Barbuda Men’s National Volleyball Team at the ECVA Final Four. Representing his country at the highest level, he showed confidence and maturity against top regional competition. He also represented the Under-23 National Team, helping secure second place, while the Senior Team claimed first place, marking an exceptional year of national representation.

At the school level, Asafa excelled for Island Academy, leading his team to a gold medal in the ABAVA Schools League. His outstanding performances throughout the tournament earned him Most Valuable Player honors, recognizing his consistent scoring, defensive contributions, and leadership on the court.

Balancing his athletic commitments with the demands of the CXC examinations and his practice commitments with the Antigua and Barbuda Youth Symphony Orchestra (ABYSO) defined his 2025. Managing national training sessions, club competitions, and academic and ABYSO responsibilities required discipline and sacrifice. Despite the physical and mental demands, Asafa remained focused, determined, and committed to excellence in every area.

Being nominated for Junior Sportsman of the Year in volleyball is confirmation that his hard work and dedication are paying off. He views the award not as a stopping point but as motivation to work harder, become stronger, and continue raising his standard. If awarded the prestigious title, Asafa believes it would be a surreal and deeply rewarding honor, recognising not only his volleyball achievements but also his overall growth and commitment as an athlete.

With a senior national debut already accomplished and strong foundations at school and club levels, Asafa Donovan’s journey is only just beginning. His drive, discipline, and competitive spirit suggest that even greater achievements lie ahead.

The 2025 National Sports Award ceremony is slated for March 1, 2026. Last March at the 32nd edition of the National Sports Award, Bikini Fitness Pro Ambassador Kimberly Percival captured her fifth Sportswoman of the Year title while West Indies cricketer Alzarri Joseph walked away with his third Sportsman of the Year title.
