Alzarri Joseph – 2025 Cricket National Sports Award Nominee

compiled by Spectator Sports Desk

At 29, Alzarri Joseph remains one of Antigua and Barbuda’s most accomplished sporting ambassadors and among the most feared fast bowlers in international cricket. A cornerstone of the West Indies cricket team, he competes across formats at the highest level of the game. Regionally, he represents the Leeward Islands cricket team, and at home, he proudly suits up for New Winthropes Lions.

Over the past year, he delivered several major performances and reached important career milestones.

During the 2025 Antigua & Barbuda Cricket Association (ABCA) Two-Day Competition, in a brief stint with the All Saints Pythons, he broke the Antiguan record for the fastest century, racing to 100 in just 31 balls. The explosive innings revealed not only his power but also his growing versatility with the bat.

On the regional stage, he continued to assert his influence for the Leeward Islands in the West Indies Championships, collecting 11 wickets in three matches. Even in limited appearances, his presence alters the balance of a contest. When Joseph begins his run-up, pressure follows.

In franchise cricket, milestones accumulated. Representing the St. Lucia Kings in the Caribbean Premier League, he crossed the landmark of 200 T20 wickets, reinforcing his reputation as one of the format’s premier strike bowlers. The milestone came while he managed injury concerns that later sidelined him for the latter half of the season.

In Test cricket, he produced the finest spell of his career. Against Australia, then ranked number one in the world, he claimed 5 for 27, a defining performance that showcased his pace, discipline, and ability to dominate elite opposition.

On June 1st, in a One Day International against the England cricket team, he took 4 wickets to move into the top ten on the West Indies’ all-time ODI wicket-takers list, placing his name firmly among the region’s distinguished bowling greats.

The international franchise circuit further expanded his impact. In Dubai, he made his debut in the International League T20, finishing third among the tournament’s leading wicket-takers with 16 wickets, serving as the driving force with the ball for MI Emirates. In the Pakistan Super League, representing Peshawar Zalmi, he claimed 12 wickets before withdrawing due to safety concerns, including a memorable player-of-the-match spell of 3 for 15 against the Lahore Qalandars.

Injury proved the sternest challenge of the year. Being forced off the field during a critical stretch tested Alzarri’s patience and resolve. Yet he approached recovery with perspective, understanding that setbacks are part of the fast bowler’s demanding journey.

Despite the season being shortened, it remained a year filled with impact and milestones. From regional dominance to global franchise success, he continued strengthening his legacy as one of the Caribbean’s premier fast bowlers.

Alzarri indicated to Spectator Sports Desk that winning Sportsman of the Year holds deep meaning for him. It represents recognition from home for the dedication, sacrifice, and discipline required to represent Antigua and Barbuda internationally. Already a three-time recipient of the award, another victory would make this season, defined by both brilliance and resilience, one of the most memorable of his career.

Alzarri Joseph’s story this year is not simply about speed. It is about endurance, excellence, and carrying Antigua and Barbuda’s flag into the fiercest arenas of the game, ready each time to run in again.
