May 19, 2025 – Alzarri Joseph will be considered for future leadership roles in West Indies Captaincy.
Coach Daren Sammy gave this response to a question posed about Alzarri’s status in the team. Sammy stated that Alzarri ” has been a leader in the dressing room and the bowling attack. We will continue to look at him, he is one of the persons who will be looked at going forward.”
Sammy also indicated that there is no punishment left for Alzarri; he has served his sanctions and is executing his role in the team.
The discussion was a part of the recently concluded press conference to introduce the newly appointed test captain, Roston Chase. The panellists were the Chief Operating Officer of CWI, Lynford Inverary; Director of Cricket, Miles Bascombe; Head Coach, Daren Sammy; and Captain, Roston Chase.

Six players were a part of the screening process from which Captain Chase and Vice Captain Jomel Warrican were selected for the upcoming home series versus Australia in June. The CWI Board unanimously approved the appointments. A data-informed, multidimensional framework formed the basis of the selection process, fulfilling a CWI objective to strengthen accountability, transparency, and alignment with modern cricketing standards.
Moving forward, captains will be subject to continuous data-driven evaluations. Director of Cricket Miles Bascombe stated during the press conference, “If we are moving towards a data-centric approach, we must have that data that we will mine for insights. The plan is to start a programme of evaluation of captains. All the way from the senior level, having captain evaluations completed at the end of tours.”
He continued, “We’ll do it with our A-teams, because that would be one of the areas that we aim at for development of future West Indian captains. We also do it across our regional and age group tournaments. We’re getting reports from coaches as well as hopefully umpires, you know, about how the captains perform, how they plan, how they equip themselves on the field.”
