2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup – A Look Back

Spectator Sports Desk

The 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup concluded with host nation India lifting the trophy, making them the most successful team in the tournament’s history with three titles. Although the final may not be remembered for its intensity, the entire tournament delivered drama, controversy, and exceptional cricket.

Hosting and Tournament Background

In November 2021, the International Cricket Council announced that India and Sri Lanka would co-host the tournament. Sri Lanka had initially offered to host the entire competition, but after expanding to 20 teams in the previous edition, the country did not have enough stadiums to host all fixtures.

This World Cup was set against a unique political backdrop. The long-standing tensions between India and Pakistan forced the ICC to adopt a hybrid hosting model, first used during the ICC Champions Trophy. Under this system, Pakistan would not play any of its matches on Indian soil, nor would India play on Pakistani soil. Which meant Pakistan would play all their games in Sri Lanka

Further controversy erupted on January 3, 2026, when the Bangladesh Cricket Board asked for its matches to be moved from India, citing security concerns. The request followed the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s demand that the Indian Premier League franchise Kolkata Knight Riders remove Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman from their squad. Bangladesh also proposed exchanging venues with the Ireland national cricket team, whose matches were scheduled in Sri Lanka.

On January 21, the ICC rejected the request. Three days later, Bangladesh officially withdrew from the tournament and were replaced by  Scotland.

Political tensions continued to spill into the tournament. The Pakistani government advised their team not to play their Group A match against India. The match eventually went ahead on February 15, but the captains notably did not shake hands during the coin toss.

A Tournament Defined by Competition

Despite the off-field drama, the cricket was still spectacular. Several top teams overcame early scares in their campaigns.

Pakistan narrowly defeated the Netherlands in the tournament’s opening match, requiring last-over heroics. India were surprisingly restricted to 161 against the United States, but their powerful bowling attack ensured victory. England had a near scare against Nepal, but they were able to get past.

One of the tournament’s biggest upsets came when Zimbabwe defeated Australia in the group stage, which ultimately eliminated the Australians from the competition.

Six-Hitting Record

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is widely regarded as cricket’s most exciting format, and six-hitting remains one of its biggest attractions.

A staggering 780 sixes were struck during the tournament, shattering the previous record of 517, set during the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

Remarkably, the five players with the most sixes in a single T20 World Cup edition all came from this tournament:

  1. Sanju Samson – 24 sixes
  2. Finn Allen – 20 sixes
  3. Shimron Hetmyer – 19 sixes
  4. Sahibzada Farhan – 18 sixes
  5. Ishan Kishan – 18 sixes

Several players produced outstanding performances throughout the competition.

Shimron Hetmyer, a West Indies star, gave his team hope with a remarkable tournament. Hetmyer blasted 19 sixes, breaking the previous West Indies record of 17 set by Nicholas Pooran. Batting higher in the order proved to be a masterstroke as he accumulated 248 runs.

India’s Jasprit Bumrah was exceptional once again on the biggest stage. He finished as the joint-leading wicket-taker with 14 wickets and recorded the best economy rate among bowlers who played more than five matches. He also reached40 career wickets in T20 World Cup history, the most among fast bowlers.

Blessing Muzarabani, the Zimbabwean pacer, captured the imagination of fans with his pace, aggression, and skill. Muzarabani took 13 wickets and played a key role in Zimbabwe’s memorable campaign.

Few stories were as dramatic as Sanju Samson. Initially not India’s first-choice player, he featured only once in the group stage and missed the opening Super 8 match. However, once recalled he dominated the tournament, scoring 299 runs in four matches and smashing 24 sixes. His explosive performances earned him the Player of the Tournament award.

The 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will be remembered as a top-tier tournament. Records were broken, emerging teams made headlines, and some of the game’s biggest stars delivered on the grand stage.

Although controversy surrounded parts of the competition, when the final ball was bowled, one thing was clear: Cricket won!
