Sowerby “S” Gomes

June 9, 1965 – Sowerby “S” Gomes was born on Dickenson Bay Street (Back Street), St. John’s Antigua, to Raymond Gomes of Dickenson Bay Street now deceased and Marie Uvella Gomes, a native of Dominica. His early education foundations were the Holy Family Primary School (Roman School) and the T N Kirnon Primary School (All Age Primary School).  He is also an alumnus of the Antigua Grammar School and the Antigua State College. He earned an athletic scholarship to attend university through the Villa Lions Soccer Academy’s scholarship program in 1987. Sowerby obtained a BSc Accounting from the Oklahoma Wesleyan University (OWU) in 1991.  During his tenure at OWU he was NCCAA player of the year (1989), and on the Dean’s List among many other outstanding achievements. He captained the University’s soccer team for 3 years. He was also named Who’s Who among students in the American Universities and Colleges for the period 1990-1991.  He was also selected as an Outstanding Young Man of America in 1989, in recognition of outstanding professional achievement, superior leadership and exceptional service to the community. He was inducted in the University’s Hall of Fame for outstanding achievements, athletically and academically, in 2006. He earned an MBA in Business Administration from University of Leicester in 2010. Sowerby’s football prowess on the field earned his national team selection in 1992. He would go on to captain the team for five (5) years. Sowerby held the position of Vice President of the Villa Lions Football Club from 1992 to 2021. He coached the Villa Lions Football Club for the 2016/2017 period and was the Technical Director for the club from 2018 to 2021.  He also served as Chief Coordinator and Director of the Villa Lions Soccer Academy (VLSA) from 1993 to July 2021.   Under his direction the Villa Lions Soccer Academy has been the most consistent in the development of technically competent youth footballers who have gone on to all levels of national representation, pursued football scholarships at universities abroad and served as the core unit for many of the top teams in Antigua. He received his international Coaching License (DFB-A-Level) (DEUTSCHER FUSSBALL-BUND) in 2013. Sowerby is a Director and a Counselor within the Second Chance Program, a program which offers appropriate mediation in bringing ex- offenders back into the community. The program’s mission is to disrupt the cycle of incarceration and poverty by helping people find their way to Self-sufficiency.  He also tutors youth, preparing them for their SAT exam (High school Math and English papers) from 1999 to present. Professionally, Sowerby has been the Accounts Manager at the Epicurean Fine Foods and Pharmacy, Director at G & S Consultancy Services Inc, Accountant and Chief Financial Officer at Emerald Cove Development Group Ltd., Consultant at Biz to Yacht Jet Inc He currently serves as the Technical Director of the Antigua and Barbuda Football Association.
